Identification help

Hello, was hoping for some input.

Is the below pic a hatchling black rat? I had assumed so but someone thought it could be a prarie king. The snake was found it southwestern Illinois. Unfortunately it is not alive in the pic.

It may be a Western Fox Snake (don't know)but it is not a Black Rat Snake. Need better pictures, etc. to give you a better answer.

No doubt of it. The head and neck markings are typical. As are the shape of the saddles and the colors.

I've spent some time after work looking at fox snake and prarie king pics and would agree with prarie king besed on the pattern that was on top of the head.

I'm really disappointed that this guy didn't make it.
