cheap MVB

kephy Aug 11, 2004 08:26 PM

Someone on another forum is asking about a MVB they found at Home Depot. I have a major red flag going off in my head, simply because it only costs about $13. However, there are a lot of products that around suitable for reptiles that can be found at half or less than half the price of their counterpart made specifically for reptiles (heat lamps come to mind.) So I told them I would ask around. I don't know a whole lot about what makes a murcury vapor bulb a murcury vapor bulb, if they are all capable of produce heat and UVB or if there is something special about the ones made for reptiles.

If anyone can shed some light on this, please help me out. If this could do the trick, it would save a lot of people a lot of money. If it's absolutely nothing like the kind that we use for reptiles, it will be good to know why so we can advise folks to avoid them in the future.

UVB lights must have a quartz lense as UVB light cannot pass through glass. There are many types of lights for industrial purposes including metal halide, mercury vapor, florescent... but they do not put out UVB.

No worries Bennett, that's what I figured. I told them I didn't think it would do the trick, but other than the price I personally could not explain how it's different. Now I can. Do you mind if I quote your post?

Thanks again for answering.

for reptiles you need a focused beam, flood or spot. any UVB light will show you how many microwatts per cubic centimeter it outputs at various distances as well. (thats a selling point so most manufacturers are proud of it.)

I don't think Phillips even makes UVB lights under their name. Westron is the largest manufacturer of UVB bulbs. They are in Canada.
