Time to build a rack! LOL

listenn Aug 11, 2004 09:59 PM

There are only so many ways you can situate things on bookshelves! It's past time to build a rack. LOL Currently there are 36 hatchlings / yearlings and 6 aub-adults / adults. I've already picked out the Rubber Maid containers I want to use: 6.5 qt. & 31 qt. with Melamine 4x8 3/4 in. sheets for the sides and shelves. I will be growing the majority out, so I'm open-minded to different designs. Any one have a good rack design they care to share? :D

Julie,
I completely understand...I'm currently at 61 snakes, 24 of which are corns, and of the 24, 9 are babies and the rest are adults to subadults. I am moving in less than 60 days and plan to build a permanent rack after I move. I have everything in Sterilite containers now, which I prefer over Rubbermaid...just personal preference I guess. I love the fact that Target brand paper towels fit perfectly in a 32 quart Sterilte. Plus, there is a new line of 40Qt Sterilites that have snapping handles for added security. One thing I am planning on doing is NOT having shelves too low. My back kills after a full day of cleaning/feeding my snakes and I'm only 28! Well, at any rate, its nice to know I'm not the only one thinking what you typed.lol.

I'm stopping at 60...I swear!

So much for stopping at 60! Hehehe. The design I have in my head is to have the shelves perfectly spaced so the top for the container isn't needed, because it will met with the melamine shelves. To fully understand you may want to visit VMS's website and tour their facility online at http://www.vmsherp.com/ViewFacility.htm Sean and Monica were nice enough to take very clear pictures so you can see exactly how it looks. *applause* I'm a bit nervous of trying to measure it all out myself though. There's too much to mess up and melamine runs $30 a sheet. :x

Julie,
I know....I received a corn to replace a nonfeeder sent to me by the breeder. (excellent cust service by the way!) I hear ya about the measurements. 'Measure twice, cut once' my father always said. I have seen very similar setups and they look nice. I will do something similar to vmsherps probably. I'm moving and will have over 2000 sq ft of new herp room space. It will be a VERY long work in progress. I have plumbing and electric customized to suit my needs already but its the actual layout that I'm still trying to plan. PLUS, it takes money...ALOT of money to build a herp 'facility', if I can call it that. lol. Also, I get paranoid about the potential harm in anything anymore..lol...for instance, the outgassing of fermaldehyde associated with heating melamine?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
