If you live in Calif. zonata cannot be captively reproduced even with a permit. The San Diego ssp pulchra is protected and cannot be taken at all and I believe the other ssp you can only possess one of. Checking on the DFG web site is the best way to keep up with it. If you want to keep mtn kings go with the pyros (AZ mtn kings) or you can get zonata algama which is the Baja Calif mtn king the closest you'll get to calif ssp.

You may want to consider getting one of the Arizona Mountain Kings Lampropeltis pyromelana, of which there are a few subspecies. They look very similiar to the California Mountain Kings and are not uncommon to aquire from breeders. These Mountain Kings are also legal to have in California.
