My New Burm cage!

hades-raptor Jun 23, 2003 11:09 PM

Okay, I got it finished, mostly All that is left is sanding more sharp edges down, cleaning the entire thing with a bleach solution and sealing/painting it.

A side panel, and the back. We re-inforced the sides with cut in half 2x4's, so one by two's. We left a 3/8" from the sides though, so that you can slide each BIG side onto to it and have it fit like a perfect box. *everything* that was connected to a 2x4 was Glued and Screwed so this would last for a while.

Adding the bottom.. we tilted it on the side and then added 1x2's in the middle of top and bottom for extra-strength.

Added the top piece, a thicker ply-wood than the rest for strength, and so we'll be able to stack another cage on it someday. Notice the lip at the front? Space for putting in sliding doors.

Added a middle 1x2 for strength. The panel now in the fromt of it is a TEMORARY door panel. (another is placed on top.. keep reading)

This is a hole for a light to be placed on the side. Love my little staple job over the screen?

Just one of the sides.. notice the lip

Added a 2x2' square shelf. YEs.. it IS a little crooked. I thought I had it straight, but I guess I didnt :P I already glued and screwed it before I noticed.. Oh well, it'll work. it doesnt look THAT crooked in person.

The mostly finished product. The TEMPORARY door consists of two single panels that slide up and down in the lip of the cage. The bottom panel will be screwed into place so it does not move, the top panel will have a latch on it. The top is one big solid piece with two windows cut into it with screen covering it.The screen and the front in general is VERY temorary. My budget ran short so I used leftover wood for the front and screen I already have. When I get more cash I will be replacing the entire front with glass sliding doors that lock closed. But, this screen will have to do.

Tomorrow comes the sanding down of the entire thing and making sure there is NOTHING sharp or pointy to hurt the new burm Eventually I will get it painted and sealed too... Should be within the next week or so.

I hope all this made sense.

Total 50 bucks, not including the glass. The entire thing is 6' x 3' by 2 1/2'. It was going to be 3' tall but we soon realized that oh.. this will have to fit through doorways in this house So we made it that you can tip it on it's back to get it through a doorway.

Mad Props to my youngest sister. She helped out all day. And Mad props to Brian Smith, he gave me the general idea and helped out lots

The below picture is some new species I found in my backyard. I found out it's easily trained so I put it to work on the cage
