black rat stuff

cornsnakes Aug 12, 2004 09:23 AM

I recently purchased a pair of albino black rats from a guy here on K/S, they are hatchlings and look to be in pretty good health, however after having them for some time now they have yet to eat, I have been raising corns, hognose, pythons and boas for a few years now and have tried some of the known tricks to feed these guys to no avail, I allways thought the black rats were great eaters???? never would have thought I would be having to ask for insight from others, however anyone else had a problem with these guys before???? and what did you do to fix it?
please feel free to e-mail me if you have any good tips.

what are you trying to feed them primarily? f/t or live? Have you tried the other?

live pinks, I raise my own mice and rats, I am trying newborn pinks today, however they should be able to eat much larger mice.
so has anyone else ever had a stubborn black rat eater or did i get bad stock????

One problem is that for some reason albino may be a little more nervous. I don`t like albinos myself because I have seen this type of behavior before. Another thing make sure the are BLACK RATS. I once bought a hatchling from a very good pet shop and they said it was a black rat. Well it turn out being a gray rat. I kept waiting for it to turn black and it never did. Normal black rats are true PIGS when it comes to eating. Even the wild ones that I have caught to remove them from where they are not wanted I generally keep for a day or two eat in captivity.

If you don't mind me asking, who did you get them from? I also bought an albino black rat off KS and it will not eat either. I was told he was feeding on f/t fuzzies, but he is no where near big enough for fuzzies. I have tried live and f/t and tried leaving overnight, with no success. I was just wondering if it could be the same person? Also, I see Hoosier Reptiles, where you located? I am in Indianapolis
