Impending Hurricane/Tropical Storm

AMADEUS Aug 12, 2004 11:56 AM

I was wondering if anyone here could generally predict the effect these storms and all the rainfall predicted in Florida will have on the native reptile population there. I know that past storms have caused an increase in reptile/human encounters, and was wondering if the same could be expected there.

I hope you have buckets ready for all the frogs!
People often see snakes moving right before a big storm. The ones I have seen are generally in racing mode going to higher elevation or leaving a flood plain area, they aren't hunting! Most snakes are pretty good at seeking cover during storms. I would imagine that snakes in Florida like drymarchon which like holes would just seek higher ground and wrap around a bush or something when it floods. A hurricane is nothing compared to a new condo complex for snake populations! Are you in Florida?

No, both my brothers are though, one is a police officer and has told me that calls about snakes go up alot after a bad storm...I am thinking that is because they are searching for high ground like you said....

I am in South Florida (on the east coast so it looks like we will be the lucky ones). Which is fine by me as I have seen every major storm thru here Since Donna (including Andrew).

One thing that is interesting is that the snakes in my collection become animated and seek the tops of their cages as the storm gets near.
