I'm in Ocala too...I'm also a tad worried about prolonged power outages. Especially, since I have montane's that don't like it hot...and two neonate Merus as well.

It's about 85 outside right now and it's been overcast all day, but not raining. I'm hoping that with the rain, it will cool off even more and so it won't be a big deal.

What is everyone's opinion on how long until we should worry about no power? My father in law has a generator, but I'm not sure he'll want to let go of it. My dad has one, too, and he laughed saying his generator will be with him...what a turd. LOL

are you near the forest? Im in Marion Oaks which sucks because there is so many tall skinny bout to fall over at any second type trees, i worry about a tree comming in my window and it sucks because most likely ill be stuck at work. wondering if there is a pine tree in my house >

trinacliff Aug 12, 2004 05:36 PM

I live about 5 minutes from you...haha...small world. No tall skinny trees, but big oak trees...none that can really fall through our house, but a few that could fall on my barn where my chams and horses are. Fingers crossed....

I really hope we don't lose power for long...that is what I'm really worried about.

Marion Oaks got hit really hard during hurricane Andrew...so certainly ya'll can't be that unlucky for it to hit twice, right?

Take care

I'm also in FL... Mickey Mouse Ville area. :-p My power actually went out this evening for about an hour. Got worried about my Fisher getting too hot, misted it down with cool water (he wasn't in there). Thankfully we're on the same power grid as a huge shopping plaza, so they got right on restoring out power.

trinacliff Aug 12, 2004 09:29 PM

Ok, so who has good tips on how to keep chams cool enough should the power go out for an extended period of time? Aside from getting a generator...LOL! I've heard of putting ice in a small container on top of the cage...wetting towels and draping them over the cages...what else works well??

How hot did it get for your Fischer's before the power came back on?

Having never lived in hurricane country I don't know how long power could stay out. During the storm I can't believe it would get hot enough to be a problem. I would suggest finding out where emergency service centers will be located (that might have a temp controlled area for pets, elderly or babies) and where you might find a source of commercial ice for putting on cage tops. If you have a good relationship with a grocery store they might be able to get you ice before theirs melts. Ice, wet towels and shade may be all you can do. After all, hot weather does happen in native habitats too.

trinacliff Aug 12, 2004 09:26 PM

I'm curious to see where you found that info...I've never seen anything that pinned down that type of detail in a projected path. Usually, all I see is a big wide guesstimate of where it's gonna go...so where did it say that it's coming exactly this way?? Please show me as I'd really want to see...and show my husband...LOL!

Thanks

I live in Seminole County and am worried about the storm too. But luckily I live near an FPL station. For info about the hurricane, check out weather.com. If you put in your zip at the top of the page, it will take you to your city's page and will have all of the advisories for you area. Anyone know if they are still having the breeder's expo in Daytona this weekend?

trinacliff Aug 12, 2004 11:28 PM

Oh dear!!! I hope so!!!!!!!!! I've been looking forward to Daytona for a long time. I hope since it's on the east coast that it will still go on...and hopefully the storm will be gone by Saturday, right?

How do we find out??

I've been looking around on the forums to see if it is still going on but haven't found anything yet. Ironically enough I have seen two different storms here that hit the west coast and actually did more damage on the east coast (around Daytona too. I'm not making this up and yes it does seem unbelievable.) Any way if your in Daytona stay put as if things go haywire it will be hard to travel far. If you are leaving for Daytona today get there real early as the storm is supposed to hit late in the day.

trinacliff Aug 13, 2004 07:56 AM

I'm not there yet, but we are supposed to leave tomorrow AM to head over for the show. I just hope it's still going on...and that there are actually vendors there...haha! I guess most of them would already be getting there today or earlier, I would think.

Please post here if you find anything that might tell us if it's going to go on or not.

Thanks!

its called the weather channel....

trinacliff Aug 13, 2004 03:53 PM

Well, well, are we getting sarcastic here? I was just asking where you saw it because I hadn't seen that...and what do you know...it turned more south and is now heading for Orlando. The eye is no longer heading straight for us. Like I said, they rarely know exactly where it's going to go until right before it gets there.

Well the first path was supposed to hit tampa first then hit ocala then jacksonville, they later changed it... i think its funny that they mad Tampa evacuate and then barely rained there, i got little rain and only breezes. there is 2 more hurricanes forming in the tropics

Calparsoni Aug 12, 2004 09:58 PM

Buy your beer now for the hurricane party while you still can....Seriuosly, I'm in paisley and all I'm really worried about is the electric going out. The wind shouldn't be bad enough to tear up houses inland but it will probably knock down trees. If you keep anybody outdoors you may want to bring them inside depending on location and type of cage. I haven't quite decided if I will bring my panther and day geckoes in yet. Their cages are attached to my screen porch and out of the path of tree branches and I build most of my cages for this type of weather. Time will tell. I usually wait until absolutely necessary to move my reptiles because moving them around stresses them more than leaving them out sometimes. With the day geckoes it throws their egglaying cycle off by at least a month. I grew up on the gulf coast of Texas and have been through one hurricane (allen '81 I think) which was a tropical storm by the time it got to me(although tropical storm standards at the time are category 1 or 2 storms now. we had 90mph winds AFTER it had been downgraded)I have been through several other tropical storms here as well as in Tx. Be careful be prepared but don't govt bureaucrats scare the heck out of you either.

I was reading through the rest of your thread and figure i'd share some more of my experiences. Most of my experience with cooler temp chams here in fl. has been with parsons, jacksons, and several species of brooksia chameleons. even though they stress at higher temps you can get away with a lot if you play with cage placement and humidity. If you have a well planted yard and screen cages that are somewhat portable try putting the cages inside shrubbery on the northeast side of the house (out of anything but morning sun). The shade and humidity make a lot of difference. Otherwise, keep the cages in north facing room. Mist more frequently than normal. If you live near a stand of cypress trees (like in your yard for this) you already know how much cooler temps are try keeping your cages there during the day. On a final note 90% of all wildlife imported into this country comes into miami. While it does tend to be a little cooler than everyone else during the summer, it is still hot. A lot of importers don't air condition their wharehouses and even the ones that do routinely move their chameleon cages out during the day and while we can argue about how well imports do, they are seldom killed by heat, it's usually stress from parasites. As sensetive as some species are to heat If you play a bit and pay attention you should be fine.

jovcham Aug 13, 2004 12:03 PM

As of 12pm looks like central FL (my area) is going to be directly in the huricans path... ya know what I'm most concerned with!?!?!?! my huge bin of 1,000 roaches getting blown over in the storm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm still trying to convince my roomate they will not excape if we put them in the laundry closet.
