Question about selling cages and snakes

Randy Bush Aug 12, 2004 06:25 PM

This is NOT and ad but I have a few questions. Some of you may know me and I used to be HOT and HEAVY into boas. I am getting out of boas and reptiles right now but I know the fever will hit again oneday! Anyway, aside from a lot of little items I am selling 2.2 amaralis and a LOT of boaphile cages. I can't believe someone has not jumped all over them! I would have only dreamed of such a deal a year or so ago! Take for instance the amaralis; 2.2 and the 2 females are HUGE. This is a quad of boas that are READY to breed now. I am offering a rediculous price on them and the cages. As you know plastic cages like boaphile cages do not wear unless you break something on them. I am offering them at an extremely LOW price also. I have had several interested but everyone is wanting to low ball even more. I just HOPE when I get back into boas I will be able to find such deals. They are posted right now on the classifieds but I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem?? I know this has been a GREAT year for boa breeding. It seems like the morphs are breeding better than rats right now. So there is no shortage of supply verses demand. Someone take a little road trip to Alabama and get hooked up with all this stuff.

If it makes you feel any better, I saw your ad and would have jumped all over it except for the fact that I am in California. I would love to find a deal like that closer to me, but I guess I'll just have to wait.

Hope your luck improves.

Hey Randy,
Don't feel too bad, the Daytona show is pretty much killing sales all over the place, i have heard it from several people. Everyone that is going is holding off until the see what they might want to pick up there. Heck I am even guilty of it. I plan on getting a bunch of new cages and thigs from Jeff Ronne but I have told him to wait until after the show, not because I plan on getting them somewhere else, but because I don't want to make plans for all these cages and then come home with a snake that needs a different cage, so i figured after the show I would know for sure what I want.
I saw you ads, and yes you are giving those snakes away, but after the show it will be better, just wait.
Good Luck

I hope that's what it is! I know how the Daytona fever is. I have been several times myself and this year should be incredible with all the breeding successes this year. I'm kind of sorry that I will miss it this year. I have a habit of spending too much when I go. Last time I went I spent $6000. Next time I go I'll just buy beer and rum!!

I had a group of poss dh snow 35 of em and the highest bidding ever got was $505. That's right under 15 bucks each for poss dh snows, needless to say it did not meet my reserve. Craig

It is ridiculous the offers I am getting! I may just hold off until next month's Dixie Reptile Show here in Birmingham.

but I'm sure people are used to me and wacky theories anyway. Remember when the last slowdown in herps happened? It was during the last global conflict, Gulf War #1. I live in a fairly secluded part of the US(Montana), so I wouldn't of even known a Herp market crash was afoot.. but I had contacts elsewhere and they were telling me all about it. I was born in a pet shop, harnessed to a counter, raised by monkeys, ect. I've been selling pets of all kinds since then. As I've watched what kind of pet a consumer desires, I've noticed an ossilating trend from Fuzzy/Cute to Scaley/Weird. Exactly the same thing happened during Desert Storm that is happening now, during Gulf War #2. Over the last year, I've been selling more soft and cuddly rodents and birds than the previous peace-time years from 98-2002. During those years reptiles and exotics were bu-koo business. Whatever the case, I ignore those trends and buy what I want, when I want. These slowdowns can become a great opportunity for vultures, like myself, to clean people out of breeding age exotics...and be ready for the short-lived snapback.

PS- I'm very surprised that you still have those BCA. I was dead set on buying a pair from Starlight specialties... then Burke emailed me to see if I was interested in one of their Arabesque het Albinos.. had to buy him. If I were you, I'd double the price and wait another month.. they'll sell.

Biophiliacs Aug 12, 2004 08:25 PM

That albino(in the last post) is from Joel DuBay, bought her a month ago. Great boa, great feeder. 100% satisfied.

Here's the Arabesque het Albino I'm getting from Burke's, thanks Tom and Amanda.

I saw your ad AND would love to jump on the opportunity BUT I think it doesn't necessarily have to do with Daytona entirely....I just think money is tight for people these days. If I were you, I wouldn't sell them so cheap just in order to sell them. If you feel they are worth a certain amount, then stick to it and keep them if no one buys for what you think they're worth. I know its hard if you're trying to get out of herps but I wouldn't sell too cheap unless you sell to someone you know really well that may give you the chance to get back some of the bloodline later on down the road. Also, I think the pick-up only deal limits you. Maybe offer shipping but at the buyers expense??? If someone is thinking of buying them from out of state, they may bite. Who knows?!?!?
