Cyprus mulch seems to be about the most popular choice.

Where do you get your cypress mulch from? I know that I can get it from Menards, but I was wondering if there would be mites or other bugs in there? If so what would I have to do bake it to kill the bugs? Thanks Steve

I'm in central Florida, so I can get it anywhere, KMart, Walmart. Never had a problem with bugs, although I'm sure some crawl in through the holes in the bags. I don't bake it or anything; just pile it in.

Thanks for the reply. How is that stuff for babies to be on when feeding them crickets or should i feed the crickets to him/her from a cup so they dont get loose? The only reason I am concerned is cause I had mites once from a snake I bought and would hate to get them again. The cage I am going to be keeping him/her in for no is 6`h x 6`l x 2`d made in to 4 cages so I dont want any of my other lizards getting bugs either. Thanks Steve

Sorry to be awhile replying. I was in the middle of hurricane Charley and just got my power on late last night.

I used cyprus for mine as babies with no problem. The one thing I did do with babies is to keep them in a 20 gallon at first so they could be sure of finding their crickets. I did pour the crickets into a dish, but not to keep them there, just to get my tegus used to looking to the dish for food, rather than my fingers. Really helped when I switched them to mice; no chance of them getting a finger when they are fixated on the bowl.
