Can I heat an AP cage with a sticky undertank heater?..more..

eliotstone Aug 12, 2004 09:15 PM

I am looking at the 3'x2'x1' cage from animal plastics for my Suriname Bcc, and I was wondering if I could heat them effectively with a Zoo Med undertank heater, as I have several going spare. I have the size that are made for 20 gallon tanks, but I have several of them, so do you think they would do the trick?
thanks,
Eliot STone

Cage seems a bit small for a boa doesnt it. well to answer your question. You can but it needs to be on a thermostat, as those things tend to get in the 120-130 range if you let them go on there own. a cheaper method is human heat pads w/o the auto shut off feature, they are 7-10 bucks at walmart and i use them and they have been on med non stop for 8 years and had no probs whatso ever.

The cages for the boas are until they reach about 4.5 feet, then on to 6 footers, and my spotted pythons will take over the three footers.
Thanks for your reply,

Do you put the human heat pads inside or outside of the cage?

AP cages are very heavy, suggesting that the HDPE they use is quite dense. Not the ideal situation for heat to have to pass through.

Even then, the temperature of your room and the amount and placement of the ventilation on the cage will greatly effect the effectiveness of the heat pads.

There are ways to use these pads inside of cages. I have never tried it, though, so I don't feel comfortable trying to remember what other people have written.
