Fumes from sterilite tubs

eryxboa Aug 12, 2004 09:43 PM

I recently designed a rack with sterilite clear storage tubs(56quarts??). When they are left in the rack for a while, and are opened, a very unpleasant plastic smell emits from the cage. Do they need to be washed with stronger chemicals to get rid of the smell? Or is it possible to do away with the fumes? Are these fumes harmful to snakes, because if they are, I might have to find a different brand that fits these dimensions?(probably unlikely)I drilled all of my ventilation holes with a drill, if that matters. Thanks, Gene

I had that happen with a batch of large plastic boxes. I ended up leaving them open for about a month and waited for them to offgas. Cleaning them with chemicals can make things worse, so do so carefully. If the boxes feel slightly "slimy" to the touch you might try a mild degreaser. Perhaps dishwasher detergent. Rinse very well.

Hard to say if it's dangerous to herps. I suspect that it is not good for them as it gave me a bit of a headache.

I had to use dish detergent as well.
Then i heated the new rack to slightly higher temps than i would use for the actual housing conditions(for a couple of days). Then cleaned them again.
No smell after that,or any problems either.

Good luck
