cooked beef heart for BTS?

riiotgrrl Aug 12, 2004 10:02 PM

i bought some at the supermarket for griff tonite. I microed some and gave it to him and he loved it! I thought it would be a nice change from high grade canned cat food, snails and fruit. Is it too fatty or anything i should know about before giving him more?

Hey! What exactly is that? I'm imagining a big animal heart or something!

riiotgrrl Aug 13, 2004 10:16 PM

They make it look like regular meat at the meat dept so it isnt like a huge cow heart.. they cut it into strips,

Hey, no need to cook it! It is very lean meat and they love it! I grind a whole one up, minus the fat, with a meat grinder, add just a touch of water, and freeze it in ice cube trays overnight. Then I take it out and put in freezer bags so I can feed it whenever I want. There is a zoo somewhere that uses this for all their carnivorous lizards! A great way to get him to eat his vitamins and vegies, he can't resist it!

IS there a chance that uncooked meat is bad for him? I dont want him getting salmonella or trichinosis or anything..

When dealing with raw meat make sure it doesn't sit out too long. In other words, when you bring it home from the store be sure to refrigerate or freeze it right away. Zoo's and other professionals do this all the time! Much is lost in the cooking of the meat! We make all our cat and dog food from raw meats and bones, and have not yet had a problem. Just be sure to clean up well when working with it.
With your skink, just be sure to pick up the dish of uneaten meat right away and not let it sit around. One of the problems with canned cat and dog foods is the amount of corn and grains used, which are certainly not a part of a lizards natural diet!
Food for thought. Don't do it if you are not comfortable with it! Do your own research. That's the best way!
