Pond Liner - NEED FEEDBACK ASAP

chewieu Aug 13, 2004 07:47 AM

I post this before but never got any feedback.. and i need to get my american alligator a new enclosure asap. I HAVE to put him in a room that measures 7'x12' and I plan on making his pond 7'x5' for now, then expanding it if everything works out well. The problem is.. this is a room in a house. I don't want to go the kiddy pool route because I want to maximise his space. Basically anyone who has ever had experience in using pond liners for alligator ponds, please tell me how it worked out! I need to know what to look out for, what works and what doesn't, etc. Thank you..

A couple of weeks back I built my alligator a new home with his swimming area made of a plywood framed 45mil thick pond liner. They have 6 inch wide repair tape that I used in all the corners so it would be twice as thick. In all the corners I folded the excess like hospital corners when making a bed so there was no ripples for him to bite on. I built his swimming area 4 feet by 5 feet by 18 inch deep. I heat it with an 800 watt titanium aquarium heater. So far it is all working out. Ask me again in a few months LOL!

Good luck

One option that you might look at would be to just build a large plywood box and then line it with Fiberglass. One the size that your talking about could be built for less then $150. All you would really need to do is use the fiberglass fabric in the corners and then coat the entire box with the resin. If you wanted to, after it dries hit the corners up with silicone for extra protection. I have built several ponds this way and they are very easy to maintain and fairly inexpensive for the size your talking about. =)
