chamsrcool Aug 13, 2004 11:13 AM

i have a little baby veiled...well maby not little about 6 inches total and shedding today anyway i found some english ivy i could get for free and it seems to grow really fast and takes up less space than pothos which i have tons of.

is it bad for veileds to have in there cage ?

also i had my cham outside on an unknown species of buch and he decided to try the leaves( first herb. tasting for him) and i didn't catch it untill he downed about four leaves.
he seems to be ok as this was two days ago. but should i not put him on this plant....is thee an online diconomus tree or what ever those are so i can figure out what this tree is?

unknown species of plants are bad news always try to keep to what herp keepers/experts recomend and leaf eating is usually a sign of lack of water where the chameleon tries to make up for by eating green leaves.

Take a branch of the outdoor plant to a garden center and ask them what it is. Some ivy is not edible but there are many many hybrids and varieties out there. Some of the classic cham info sites have links to safe plant lists. Try checking these:

To keep it easy, as a rule, ivy (Hedera spp.) is not a safe plant.

Dittos what lele said. off the top of my head, if you are looking for a safe vine-like plant that is not pothos and basically non-toxic there is a ficus species known as "Ficus Pumila that is a creeping plant. There is even a variety known as "Quercafolia" that somewhat resembles english ivy. If you are outdoors you could also try Grapes (Vitis- the ones you eat...there are some other closely related genera also called grape ivy's that I am unsure about off-hand)green beans or peas,or squashes or melons. I have tried all of these with either my iquanas or my chameleons and the only casualties I have ever had were the plants.
