Precious Stevie...

veronicag Aug 13, 2004 11:37 AM

Thanks to Matt at Mystical-Dragons.com we have a beautiful little baby dragon, which Matt endearingly named after Stevie Wonder. Stevie is sight impaired, but is otherwise one healthy little dragon. He can eat crickets and silkies but he needs our help. We hand feed him crickets and silkies with tweezers 2 or 3 times a day, and he can see his salad bowl and eagerly chows down on salad and pellets.

Stevie is still shedding around his face and neck, but his colors are coming through beautifully! Well, what do you expect, this is one of Matt's dragons! They are all beautifully colored! Here are a few photos that we took of Stevie last night...

Veronica and Ramon are awesome for taking in special needs animals, and giving them the the best care, and special treatment they require and deserve from their owners for as long as they can share their lives with us. Anyone who takes in special needs animals whether it be a gift, adopted, or rescued from an abusive situation is an angel, and a special person in my book. We are blessed with quite a few super loving people on this forums alone. Veronica, Cheri/Axe and the list goes on. All are a great asset to our community and to life as a whole I'm very happy Stevie found such a great place, but either way I would have saw to it that he had the best life and care possible. If I had the ability/space I would like to be on that list with them as well some day. Thanks Veronica

Probably the most giving person on here and appreciative I have met online. As I said before, good head on her shoulder and a BIG heart!

Her site is designed for easy to locate information on bearded dragons and I use. There is a lot of work that has been put into her site and its for the public good and animal well being, not profit as she does not sell animals on it......not that there is anything wrong with sites that do sell, but I find it admirable that she does this just for other people's animals.... pretty unique person!

HA HA that's my BOY!! Look at the way he is sitting LOL. What a little character he is, as he gets hand fed his crickets like a KING!! LMAO!!! He is getting a Buddha belly Veronica. That was a nice little growth spurt he had too. You are doing so good for my boy Veronica, and I'm very happy he was taken in by my first choice in a home for him It makes me very happy to see him sitting like a king chowing down on those dumb crickets that just seem to float around by his head. He must think he is the best hunter around LOL. Cute little guy I must add Maybe if you get him a cup for his crickets he could catch them like he eats his pellets/salad. I know when he was here if a cricket stopped in front of him for any amount of time BAMM!!! it was a goner. Thanks again for taking him in and giving him a great loving home He looks happy and satisfied, and what a cute face he has. I did grow attached to him with feeding him daily by hand. He was my buddy, and such a great personality 'Lila' Steve hehe.

Thanks Matt! I really have to meet you one of these days! You have just been the kindest person!

Stevie deserves nothing but the very best and that's what he gets! As I see it, some of these dragons that we rescue have dibilitating, life-threatening diseases (MBD, Yellow Fungus, etc) and if they only have so long to live. It should be the very best life we can offer them. Even if that "life" is only for a few weeks or months. That's all they have. I can really, truthfully say that I enjoy what I do. It's rewarding and gives me hope. Thanks again Matt for trusting Stevie in our care.

Yeah, he is getting quite the buddah belly. LOL I'll give your cup idea a try over the weekend and see how he takes to it. He'll probably "catch" on right away. HA! Have a great weekend Matt and take care.

Thanks B22. It was my understanding from Matt that he's always been like this. We have given him a small dose of vitamin B complex twice in the last week. We will continue giving it to him and see if there is any improvement. Vitamin B complex certainly can't hurt him. Thanks!

Actually I tried the brewers yeast myself, as well as an extra dose of herptivite each week. Nothing really has changed as far as his vision. It seems to have been the same since day one, but he has learned how to focus/deal with it a bit better. He is not off balance or anything like that, but just has a vision problem it seems. Other then the vision to me he seemed like an overall healthy dragon and seems to have a great quality of life. Especially in the right hands with the extra attention to see to it he gets his fill of food. I personally think and hope with age after his major growth period he will be able to live rather normally with minimal help. He fears nothing that's for sure like I would expect from a totally blind dragon, so he can see. To what extent I dont really know. If I felt he was not going to have a lengthy life or any quality to life I would not have sent him off to another home, but would have let him live out his life here with me comfortably. I felt he had love to give, and would bring joy to a family that understood his disability and accepted him. I hope he does good, and in time after his growth period can live normally with minimal help. He was so cute and a real joy while he was here. I just felt with my breeding projects and lots of young ones he would be happier with more one on one time with Veronica and her husband at his young age. I think I made the right choice for him

He really is precious! I am so glad he is with you too, I know he will have the best of care and be a joy for you.

We have Richard who is a small rankin and he has vision problems. he came to us at 8 months old and had to be hand fed, he started working on trying to improve his vision with diet and also doing things to strengthen his eye muscles, it was obvious he couldnot focus properly. He's been here 5 months now and is getting on his own. We have to take the legs of the crickets and he climbs inhis bowl and eats them and he eats his little shed supers on his basking rock on his own now.

It was slow going and we had to point to his food and keep our finger there and he could focus on our finger and knew the worms would be at the end of it.... he is so cute to watch eat now, puts a smile on our face.

Thats great of you to take in a dragon who needs some extra help. If you dont mind me asking...how is he sight impaired. Is it a blindness, or muscle problem? I am just curious as I would like to become a herp vet one day, and would like to know the exact of what it is.

Thank you very much...and Stevie's colour is absolutely amazing!
