Nigerians

newherpaddict Aug 13, 2004 11:56 AM

My little ornate uro is very hyper and always zoomin around. I always see fat, lazy nigerians at shows and they don't seem nearly as hyper. Is this just because there cold or is it a normal nigerian characteristic? Also would an ornate juvenile be a fair trade for a red nigerian?

I find geryi to be very skittish animals who like to roam more than my malis and my ornates.

Ornates sell for a higher price than geryi. If you were comparing captive bred species of both in the U.S., I would say that an ornate would sell for 50-75% more than a geryi. (This is just a crude guess of course)

I meant to say that an ornate would probably sell for between 50-100% more than a geryi with the price difference being closer to 75-100%.

No, and No.

My two Nigerians are insane - very wild and VERY fast. I'm sure there are many out there who are sweet as pie and lazy, but it's not a species characteristic. The ones at the shows may just be stressed.

As far as the trade? You could probably get at least two healthy CB Nigerians for the price of one healthy CB ornate. The guy getting the ornate would be getting a heck of a deal.

How much do you think my uro (pic in original post) would cost? I think I payed $180 for him, is that about right?

I suppose it would all depend on a lot of factors, but it doesn't sound like an unreasonable amount to pay for a healthy young ornate! Especially if he's captive bred.

I've got to add that if what you're looking for is a calmer uro than your baby, all you really have to do is wait for him to grow up. Babies tend to be fairly skittish by nature of any species. I don't have personal experience with ornates yet, but I understand that generally an adult ornate is calmer than an adult nigerian/geyri.

So if you want calm, you can wait a few years with yours, or perhaps you need to trade for an adult uro. If you just like the geyri better, then I'd agree with Debb and say that the ornates are generally much more expensive.

Hope this helps,
