Centralian Setup (pics)

Chance Aug 13, 2004 04:34 PM

I just thought I'd post a couple pics of the enclosures of my 1.1 Centralian pythons, as well as another shot of the female. I just can't get enough shots of her I suppose These snakes are awesome. The male seems to really enjoy the dowel rod perch (not visible in the pics, unfortuantely) as well as the upper lip inside the enclosure. Because of that latter comment, I have to be careful when reaching in, especially with food! Other than that, though, these Visions seem to be working out very well for these pythons. Enjoy.

What size are the Visions? How long is the carpet?

These are the model #400 Visions, dimensions being 48" L x 26" W x 14" H. The carpets are each 5' (male) and 6' (female). I was actually kind of surprised at how relatively thin-bodied they are, as some of the information I've read online suggests that Centralians tend to be thicker-bodied than their other carpet cousins. The male is about the same thickness of a retic his same length (around 1.5 to 2" in diameter at his thickest point), but the female does have some girth to her, at around 3.5" diameter at her thickest point. It may be a trait they don't acquire until larger sizes are achieved (like their coloration), which would make sense when looking at the differences 1' in length makes between the male and the female.

As of now, the male is the only one that ever does any real exploring in the cage, using the 1.5" thick dowel rod perch, as well as the inside upper lip just behind the door. The female seems pretty content to just stay under her hide most all the time. Occasionally I'll catch her at night with part of her body sprawled partway across the top of the hide box. She went into a shed cycle now though, so she may become more active once she finishes.

I thought they looked like the 400. Plenty of room I would think for one carpet of there size. After looking at yours and seeing the priced coming down a bit. I might have to pick my self up a pair of these. GL w/ yours.

Thanks for the good words. The cages are definitely large enough for these carpets. Even at only 14" tall, there is plenty of room to put a perch a little over halfway up (just above the side indention) and give them plenty of room to climb around on it. I'd say if you had a female that was really large, upwards 8' or more, there probably wouldn't be much climbing room, but the cage itself would, IMO, still be plenty large enough. I'm planning on using these cages for the remainder of their days. I really like the indented vent in the back, which allows for easily lighting the cages even when stacked. Also, when my female is gravid, this will make it very easy to create a basking spot without having to worry about her getting burned. The grate across the top of that vent is metal, so there's no worry about it melting. I just really don't think you're going to find a better cage for such a low price. I'm not sure if it's only an introductory price or if they are going to hold it at that, but I do know they've been selling large numbers of these.

sounds good. May I ask how are you heating them? I will be looking into both the 400 and a Centralian to fill it.

Thanks for the info.

I tend to use mainly ambient temps for my animals and they do excellently. If needed, I will also employ a UTH.
