Soil as a substrate

charky2002 Aug 13, 2004 06:00 PM

Has anyone here ever had problems using soil(additive free, and sterilized of course ) as a substrate for a young water dragon, i've had a few people recommend it but i'd like to know any cons to using it like whats the risk of impaction, ect. What are some other good substrates as well??

avoid soils with fertilizer etc., and you should be okay. Most people with mix in peat moss and or sand to keep the soil airated.

Yea I bought the organic stuff so it doesn't have any fertilizers, pesticides, perlite, vermiculite, ects in it just pure soil. It sure is messy though.

Do you know if its possible to sterilize the peat moss like you do soil by baking it in the oven for a little bit because the only stuff I could find wasn't sterilized and I don't want to bring anything home to my critters. Also is peat moss a suitable substrate on its own. Thanks.
