Just Greens

pythonmomma Aug 14, 2004 10:40 AM

Well, first off on an update note. Dan is pooping fine now.

On to the question. Dan will only eat greens. I put a plate of pure greens (mustard, turnip, dandilion, and one other one I can't remember the name of =)) and he ate every last litle piece. Didn't leave a thing. When I put thin slices of veggies like squashes and pepper and green beans, he leaves alot of food.

So I was thinking he would be ok. I dust the food with calcium everytime. I put some pellets (what the rescue fed) on his food this morning. I am just thinking that he will be better off with greens and rep-cal pellets then just greens. I don't know though. Gimme any advice you can. Thanks for all the help.

You could get a small food processor and blend his greens and veggies up. See if he eats that. It will spoil faster but at least he'll be getting everything he needs if her eats it.

Already tried that. i did that when I first got him thinking I could make it look more like the colorful pellets and he down right refused to eat it like that. *sigh* He is is picky!

Have you tried tossing some fruit into the blended mixture, to "hide" the veggie taste?

First off try a cheese grater Peel and de-seed your squashes and grate them.

The Pellets you are using need to be checked for animal protein.. (look on the ingredients on the package) SINCE pellets are dry they should be soaked in water before you feed them that way they are ADDING water to the diet instead of taking valuable water from your iguana.

I have tried putting fruit in the food processor and he just won't eat the food mushed up like that.

I was using a veggie peeler for the squash and what not. He just picks through and gets most of the greens. There is no animal protien *listed* on the rep-cal pellets, but they are mostly corn meal and contain fake colors. I soak them before I give them to him.

He is eating 97% greens and a SMALL amount of pellets. I just don't know if turnip, collard, mustard and dandilion are enough to meet his needs.

Like I said, I am dusting every time. He will not eat mango, kale, or grapes. He will take a few blueberries and strawberrie. He HATES bannana. He won't TOUCH a plate that even smells like it.

*sigh*

Hates banana? Wow, that's nuts. Mine would have no qualms about killing me for a banana -- or any other fruit, for that matter.

Yeah, he is kinda odd. He arches his back like a cat when you pet him and he loves to go down slides at the park. He does it on his own. Climbs off my shoulder and actually walks over to the slide and goes down. My son thinks it is hilarious. I juist have to make sure I move with him as to not get his harness tangled.

Have you tried snow peas and cactus pad. My sons iguana LOVES them so much that he doesn't even tongue flick before he eats it. He goobles it up so fast that he even (by accident) bites the finger that is holding it. Try it who knows he may like it

I have tried snow peas and they are a no go, but i haven't tried cactus. Anyone know where I might find some of that?

I got the cactus pad from Publix in the produce section. They don't have it all the time but you should look. Tiny loves cactus. Good luck

I got him to eat papya and avacado today. The herp store here sells cactus so I am going to go buy some tomorrow. I know not to feed avacado often because of the fat and what not, so atleast I have a treat for him now =)

I give my iguana a salad of greens and veggies and he ate well. I try banana once to treat him, he dont seem interested at all ! I have to find something to treat him, it will help greatly for taming him.

It's too much, unless you are supplementing under the supervision of a veterinarian. His diet has plenty of calcium, and hypercalcemia is not fun. A diet made up of a variety of approved leafy greens is ok, as was proven by the guy who started the IguanaDen forum.

He might not recognise the vegetables as food. You can put them on a seperate plate for him to see and smell, until he's more familiar with them. Then bit by bit add grated veggies to his salad plate.
