how did everyone survive CHARLEY?

lele Aug 14, 2004 06:14 PM

Hey gang, my Mom and other family is in S. Venice and they sustained minimal damage (whew!) considering where it touched down.

Thought of those of you in FL and that it took a track right thru Orlando, etc. I am hoping no one had any serious loss (other than those roaches, jovanna )

My family and I are okay. A tree fell onto my parent's house and a neighbor had two tree on theirs and no water (or power). Downed power lines all over the place. Just got power back last night, cable this morning. We're some of the lucky ones. Over 2 million people have no power in FL and it's icky hot out.

I hope everyone made it through all right. I was supposed to go to the Daytona show but had to make changes in our vacation plans about a month ago when we had to put alot of money in our car. Instead we were in Myrtle Beach S.C. and had to be evacuated because of Charley.

so you would have lost out no matter what choice you made! Charley would have hit you either way! So long as you, family and animals are OK!

I'm about 50 miles NNW of Orlando and I have to say I was very fortunate. Our Power was probably the first to go out before the storm had even really hit yet and I wa slivid as I had not yet finished taking care of animals and figured that was it for power for three days or a week or so. I keep lots of Monitors and was trying to get everyones water changed before this (along with securing loose objects and everything else) Anyway my power came back on and finally went off at about 10pm or so and came back on at about 10 the next morning. Apart from a few branches down and some potted plants knocked over, I recieved no damage. I brought in an Iguana and some Uromastyx(because of the rain more than the wind.) but left my Panther chameleon and my day geckoes out figuring that if it got really bad I bring them in then. As their cages are attached to a screened in porch and are built to withstand this type of stuff I was not really that worried but watching closely any way. I totally forgot about my roaches which are outside but their cages never even blew over. Anyway Orlando,Sanford, Deland and Daytona all got hammered pretty good. Gas and Ice are hard to find commodities in Orlando area and lots of people still have no power. I of course absolutely blew off Wayne hill's show in Daytona for the more than obvious reason. I feel bad for the vendors,a few of whom are good friends of mine, but sometimes thats just how it goes here. Any way I got off really lucky and all is well for me. I hope that guy from seminole county is ok as he was most definately in the path of the storm.

Hey all, I'm at work right now responding thats the only way I have power...

There are tons of trees and powerlines down in my neiborhood, I still have no power as of today monday. Fortunatly a friend in another part of orlando has power and I have been staying there. Its a wreck over here, tons of roof damage, and I think everyone with a fence or pool screen no longer has one.

Luckly my roaches are still all in their bin! they survived outside on the back porch!I bungie corded all the cages and roach bin to the wall of my house Had only one cage damaged, the screen was ripped off one side and my little ambanja female was still sitting in her cage like nothing happened.

probably a good thing that chams can't hear well! Though her eyes must have been on sensory overload! As for the roaches...I guess we should remember that they are INDESTRUCTIBLE!!!!!!! ;-O

Yea I felt real bad leaving them out on the porch after the storm was upgraded to a catagory 4, but they were just fine, it hit at night so I'm hoping they slept thru the whole thing.

I was here at home when hurricane Juan ripped through eastern Canada, and espcecially the capital of Nova Scotia, Hlifax (my home). This town is SO OLD we had 100-200 year old elms/maples/oaks...all the large hardwoods, and about 40% of them were on the street or on/in people's houses.

I think i went 6 days without power...the only cham i had at the time (male veiled) survived it well without any lighting or heating. Fortunately it was still september, so it was plenty warm for him

I really feel for you guys on this, having experienced it myself. I can't imagine, however, having outdoor cages in this situation!!!

hope the power companies get their act together soon and the cleanup crews get going fast...(we NEVER have hurricanes here, so we had to get clean up crews from the upper states and the middle Canadian provinces!)

all the best!

Glad you are all ok...hope the power gets turned back on soon...that has to be horrible.

Take care

It's good to see you made it as did your chameleons. I hope your house is ok too. As I said I was real fortunate and recieved no damage although my wife is still a nervous wreck(she grew up in upstate N.Y. and still is not used to having to worry about hurricanes.)Like I said I never even thought about my roaches they just stayed outside in a reptarium cage (those seem to work good for keeping roaches outdoors here btw.) so it's a good thing I didn't get hit or who knows where they would have been. The good thing for chameleons like the one in your damaged cage is they really shut down at night when you keep them outdoors so she probably slept through the whole thing.
