Sick Frog!

redfonix Aug 14, 2004 07:45 PM

My NA Green Tree Frog developed a skin disease last week, so I isolated him and tried to disinfect his skin. I have been applying solutions of hydrogen peroxide (50%) mixed with water and an anti-bacterial reptile chemical (2%) mixed with water. Does anyone know exactly what this infection is, chytid fungus maybe?? Any suggestions as to how to treat him, or his chances of survival?

Thanks,

Sean

take him to a vet.

Ya he hasn't shown much improvement this week so I will have to take him to the vet. However, does anyone know what this is or how it is caused? Too much humidity in his tank?

It is a possibility that the environmental factors caused this...I'm not too educated on that species of tree frog...but just by knowing about frogs in general, because of their moist habitat needs it's easy for them to develop funal infections. Maybe there was a carrier that somehow got into the cage...or something that wasn't sanitized correctly for the frog? Not sure if you said how long you've had the frog for, but it could have been carrying it with it and just now showing physical symptoms. Not exactly sure but I'm sure the vet can do some kind of skin culture. Make sure you take in a fresh fecal sample if possible too...unless the vet says otherwise. Their droppings can also say something about their condition. Is the frog still eating though? Chances are it will be ok if still feeding good.

Thanks for the reply! Ya the sick GTF is still eating everything I put in his tank and croaking at dusk. He seems very healthy except for his skin condition. His skin actually seems to be clearing up, the discoloration is gone and all that is left are a few white spots.

If I continue treatment with hydrogen peroxide and anti-bacterial solution, will he become non-contagious?
