adult Outer Banks eastern kingsnakes

willstill Aug 14, 2004 08:50 PM

This is the pair that produced the big babies I posted earlier in the week. As you can see, the male is nearly 100% speckled. He looks more like a brooksi than an eastern (LOL). He and his mate are both small by eastern standards, both are barely 3 feet in length. Although I have seen photos (on Keith's site) of some very robust 5 footers, I think these guys tend to stay smaller than their mainland cousins. I think of a parallel evolutionary path with the little Fla. Keys cornsnake as compared to it's bigger mainland relatives. However, I don't see the outer banks king's diminutive size as a detraction. Some folks just don't wan't a six foot kingsnake, and a small obk, might just fit their needs better. This is why I like eastens so much, they are (IMHO) by far the most variable of the kingsnakes. If they hadn't been ignored for two decades (while that little ornery west coaster got all of the atterntion) who knows how many cool captive lineages we might see today. This is the male. Thanks for looking.

This girl is not as speckled as her mate, but has very bold chains. Both snakes descend from Hatteras island stock, but from different lineages. She is finally starting to put some weight back on from oviposition. Her clutch of 9 huge eggs must have made up over half of her body weight. Thanks for looking.

(lol)For the last two years I have searched Daytona to pick up the outer banks I passed on the year before. saw none there again.

Those are very impressive examples. The size is ideal for those of us who want the beauty without the big feed bill.

Hate to tell you, but Howie Sherman had several at his table. So much stuff to look at there, it's easy to miss stuff.

That had to be the part where my wife was dragging me from table to table looking for the perfect Diamond Python Female....She did find it, but at that point my feet said "Home now!!!!"LOL)

His business is called Strikers Herps. There's a link to his site on Kingsnake.com, but it's not updated. You can contact him at howiesherm@cox.net
