Horse Feeds for Rats...

uf_g8or Aug 14, 2004 11:14 PM

I know Lucien had mentioned before that he was thinking about using a horse feed from Blue Seal for rat food. Just wondering if anyone has had any success with any kind of horse feed with rats?? Also, what kind of form does it come in? I currently use Mazuri rodent feed and occasionally LabDiet but I was looking for a cheaper alternative but something that was still in the lab block or nugget form.

Does anyone have any info or experience with alternate feeds that are lab block style??

Any and all info is greatly appreciated. Thank you

Well both Mazuri 5M30 and LabDiet 5001 in 50 lb. bags usually run about $21.99 or so around here. What do you use and how much are you paying? Thanks

The local feed store searched all of his horse feed and we found that the fat content was much too low. Usually around 2.5%. I have him order "Rodent mix" from FRM (flint river mills) and it runs 12.20 50lbs. It's mixed with the product and minerals for rodents and is 25% protein and 10% fat.

Thanks for the help and info. I'll try getting that at the local feed store. Thanks again

I had a problem with feed prices from my local feed store also. For awhile I fed dog chow (without red dye). That worked O.K. but later I found a local mice/rat breeder and was able to buy directly from him. That is what worked best.
