After rain herping the Mojave

HighDesertHerper Aug 15, 2004 01:09 AM

Went out tonight and it was a very good night as you might expect after a good rain in August. I found some really cool herps but this one was the cutest. When I saw it and made a u-turn, I thought it was probably a gecko due to it only being about 4" in length. Before ushering it off the highway, I was able to get a few pics while it was chasing me around. I'm still amazed nobody hit it. It was a hard one to see.

This little Sidewinder wasn't even able to stretch accross the white line in the road as you can see at the bottom right of the second pic. It's head is only as big as a piece of the gravel in the pavement.

It was the cutest little snake I've caught in a while. Although they're all great.

Could a rattler that tiny do alot of damage if it were to tag you?

Yeah, it is still potent enough to kill you.

Nice find, I hiked the desert for 4 hours yesterday and found nothing, I must be looking in the wrong places (off of sun city pkwy). Found a few hundred lacerta type lizzies, but couldn't get one to sit still enough to even think of getting a pic

If you're interested in road herping during the next couple evenings please let me know.

I did however get to beat the crap out of the "suv" they gave me as a rental car, Haundai Santa Fe. Took it through some sort of 4wheeler trail

"Do you want full insurance coverage on that sir?"
Yes I do. hehehe

Hopefully I'll have better luck tonight.

Was out in Pioneertown Friday night after some heavy rain and came across a lot of sections of the road which had major flashflooding debris covering it, it must have poored. Anyway, found nothing but k-rats out there, but on a trip through Whitewater to end the evening, I picked up a banded-gecko at 3:00am and got some picks of a baby longnose at about 3:05am.
