Is My gecko ok?

juju Aug 15, 2004 03:20 AM

Hey everybody, new leopard gecko owner here. I'm going on a week and a half of having my little buddy and I'm starting to get a little worried. Now I know lep's aren't the most active of creatures, but mine is so lethargic I'm starting to wonder if everything is ok. I've been feeding him about everyday now, and I've really only been able to see him feed once. I'm usually up all night (gotta love late night jobs). Anyways, my point is that I'm wondering what I could do to make him a little bit more friendly, little bit more active. Is there anything I can do, or do I just have to give him time?

What kind of setup do you have him in?

What's the temps. on the hot side of the tank? And the cool side?

How often are you feeding him? What are you feeding him?

20 gallon tank, I'm using bed-a-brick, or brick-a-bed, can't remember which one. It's the stuff that you add water to and it expands. Hot side of the tank is usually a constant 87 (Using a heat pad and a lamp, can't figure out how to get it hotter! However the thermometer is at the TOP of the tank, so my guess is it's a little bit hotter near the bottom).
Cold side of the tank varies between 75-80.

He actually just shed. Noticed him last night looking kind of pale, and today see little pieces of gecko all over the tank. Not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Ack.. forgot about the food. I'm feeding him crickets, and since he's still fairly young I'm giving him a few every day. They're gut-loaded and dusted before dropped in as well.

Get him off of the bed a brick, and get him onto paper towels or newspaper...if possible get a digital thermometer and get readings from the top and bottom. Also how big in inches is he.??? if he is still really small get him into a ten gallon or just put a divider in the twenty gallon to shrink the size a little..

I agree with what Reptilefreak said, but just want to add that leos do seem to get very 'tired' a few days before they shed; mine sleeps a lot more. When they are done, maybe a day later, they'll be a bit more active again.
