Hand feeding my Nerodia

mizar 21 Jun 24, 2003 08:08 AM

Yesterday i was holding my young Nerodia in the palm of my hand (he is about 13 inch now) he was resting a bit calmly ( he dont stay like that for long) . I pick a small trout piece and try to give it to him. He do a lot of flicking then move his head away from the piece, so i was thinking that he wont get it...then bam ! He take it in one fast motion ! I was startled and almost drop him...lol Can i suppose that he is pretty tame up ? eating in my hand like that ? I guess i'm better not doing that when he is a full adult or he may grab my finger with the fish ...lol

What I like to do is use tongs. Nerodia are not stupid snakes and they will learn in a reasonable amount of time (for most of them, not all of course) that you are the one that feeds them and will not hurt them. That along with Nerodia having a high metabolism and strong feeding response should make them ignore your presence and eat right from your hands. All of mine do this, even the ones that will musk and bite me. Andy
