question

Will the people at deerfern farms answer questions if you haven't bought a uro from them?I have looked everywhere for a roundabout measurement of how much a uro grows in a year and how much they should weigh etc and when they are fully mature but NO ONE can give me a answer.I asked this question on a post from july 29th called maturity. Also does anyone on here not name their reptiles i havent named any of mine and i have had my bearded for 10 months and my uro for 5 months and I havent named them I just can't think of a suitable name but it isn't really necessary.

thanks

Doug Dix at Deer Fern Farms is always very helpful and knowledgable. The challenge isn't so much getting the answers you're looking for, it's getting a hold of him. He's usually pretty busy. I personally haven't had uros long enough (only about 4 years)to accurately answer you questions, but I do know they have a slow growth rate. Also, when asking, he'll probably want more specifics like which specie of uro you have. Good luck.

Also keep in mind that different husbandry techniques will give very different results for growth rates, and opinions very as to what is "healthy". Some think growing too fast is unhealthy, some thing growing too slowly is unhealthy. Most people have moderate to slow growth rates, but some have exceptionally fast growth rates (see posts by Robyn and Proexotics), presumably from husbandry techniques.

I know that doesn't really answer your question, but it's something to keep in mind - different folks get different results.

Well I have had my mali uro for 5 months and today he just started shedding is that too slow or bad?I know hes put on alot of weight and he gets his food supplemented with uro dust basking temp is 130 degrees lives in a 40 gallon breeder and is about 9 1/4 inch long.

My uros are all adults or sub-adults, but they don't shed often. Maybe once or twice a year. Everything I've seen on the forum and uro lists indicate that that isn't unusual.

Do you know how old he is? My malis are supposedly about 2-1/2 years old and one is about 12" and the other about 9" (I'm guessing). The one is about 170g, the other 135g. They are starting to show more yellow and black rather than the greys and tans. I just adopted them a few months back, so I don't know their history, really. Both have shed once since I got them. Other folks on the forum seem to have similar sized malis for approximately the same age.

wow, i have a mali who is probably about 12 inches long and when she was sick with worms she was 177 grams. the vet said she wanted her to get up to 270. was she wrong? because she looks great now with all the weight on her. that 170 grams thing made me paranoid.

Don't forget, there's other factors that can help determine if you're uro is healthy. My mali was pretty plump and if I remember correctly, in the neighborhood of upper 200s in grams. All three of my geyri are visibly smaller then she was, all though, longer and my smallest just topped 208 for the first time. He was 118 when I got him, and down to 89 when he got sick! My point id that lenghth may be the same as someone else's uro, but doesn't mean that if your uro is less in weight, that it's unhealthy. Factor in eating habbits, activity, and temps, or any reason to think there would be health issues, and start from there. I also like to look at their tail. That's where they store a lot of their fat reserve and if it's shape on the top begins to have an upside down "V" shape, their getting too thin. The nice plump rounded look is an indication of doing well.

I have no idea how old he is I got him 5 months ago and the pet store had him no longer then 1 month.

I sent to Doug from deerfern farms some question like you asked and he answered me! About the maturity, he said: ''Breeding is more sized based than age based. For Mali's, I like the females to be 9 to 10" minimum, males slightly larger. Most take 3 years from hatching to get this size.''

But, I sent another question like I asked in the forum (21 august) and he never answered it... but I'am not sure if me question was clear!!!

Note: I can't buy reptile from deerfern farms because I don't live in USA.
