cork wood

iamjason Aug 15, 2004 07:26 PM

ive seen cork wood a few times at my local pet store, but it is always oddly shaped. for what im going to use it for, it would be best if i had a large square or rectangular block of it. does anyone have any idea where i might find something like this? is there any other kind of wood i could use that could withstand regular misting and sit directly in the path of my humidifier without rotting?

Black Jungle sells "flats" but it get pricey

here are two other sites that sell it
http://www.geckosunlimited.com/substrates.htm
http://members.cox.net/peaceofthetropics/Cork.html

I love the stuff for my other critters but too expensive to get a large enough piece for a cham cage. Be forewarned - crix can hide VERY well in all the nooks and crannies and are difficult to find.

If you have an Orchid supply store nearby a lot of them sell the flat cork bark much cheaper than reptile suppliers they tend not to get cork rounds as it is more expensive to ship here than the flats and the orchid people usually want the flat pieces. If you have a local Orchid society (societies & clubs page of the nearest major city is a good start) the members may be able to help you and you may learn about some really cool vivarium plants. You can find info on the dart frog forum about attaching cork bark to the back of a cage an using foam insulation to fill in the cricket hiding places in the back of the bark.

To avoid filtering here is a partial name of a herp supply I've gotten it from in various sizes: Name is 3 letters, 2 of them are L, they are in Oceanside CA, and they advertise on kingsnake a lot. If you call and ask for "cork flats" they will know what you want. Fast service too! Also check with nurseries that sell staghorn ferns and bromiliads like Tillandsias or air plants. B Jungle has several other types of rot resistant wood to choose from.
