More than one Box Turtle

NORRISTHENUT Aug 15, 2004 07:30 PM

We have had an Eastern Box Turtle, enclosed photo, for about two years now.
He's a male that we rescued from the highway with a broken shell and teeth marks on his plastron, bottom side I think you call it. At any rate he has adjusted fine as far as healing up, eating and accepting his new living arrangements.
We are considering getting him a mate possibly a female raised in captivity.
I’m kind of looking for feedback on this approach.
Is it safe ? been done before ? good idea ? possible problems ?
Or go for it ?

Thank you for the response norristhenut

Yes, go for it, get him a girlfriend! The only problem you may have, males are very horny, he will try and breed with the female, ALOT. Mkae sure their enclosure is large enough for her to get away from him some of the time. I also recommend an outdoor enclosure if you want them to breed. They will do beter.

Great looking Eastern you have there. Thanks for saving him. Not sure how much space you have but it is generaly reccomended that you either have an all female group or 2-3 females for each male...you are set with a gorgeous male now get as many females as you have the space for and your set. I am just now getting back into raising box turtles I had 18 adults...10emales and 8 males...I can tell you from experience it can be a real hassle having more than one male in a group as they will fight eachother and harrass and sometime hurt/kill the females. Good Luck
