question on color of urate and type of food

gothra Aug 15, 2004 09:15 PM

Sometimes, my leos have a little yellow/tan colored crystals attached to one end of their urate, I can see that their urate itself is white, but just got these crystal "coated" at one end. I am thinking that this has some relationship with the type of food they eat. These crystals only exist with leos that eat mainly mealworms and superworms. My other 3 leos that eat crickets have pure white urate with no trace of the crystals. I actually asked my vet about this before, but he said as long as the urate itself is white, then its normal. I am not sure about this so I am asking here.

This is my mealworm/superworm setting: I use mainly oatmeal as bedding, with a mix of wheat germ, wheat bran. I also sprinkle fish flakes (for tropical fish) on top regularly. Moisture source is slices of carrot.

Besides these crystals, all my leos are fine, eating and active. Shall I be worried?

it doesnt sound like u have anythin to worry bout, if i was to take a guess at it the crystal thing you see is all the chitin(pardon tha spellin if incorrect) just as long as theyre eating fine and are still active then you shouldnt have anythin to worry about, i would try varying their diet a lil bit more tho, have a mix of mealworms, superworms, crickets maybe even roaches. this is juss my opinion if anyone out there is mo knowledgeble then please feel free to correct me.
