Well, this depends heavily on where you are located. Usually if you go out early morning you can find herps laying under decent sized, relatively flat objects... boards, stones, fallen logs, etc. Be very careful when moving larger objects that you don't crush what might be underneath. Also, if you live in an area with venemous species, lift things toward you,a nd preferably with a hook/tongs so as not to get your hands near any teeth.
Elevation, temperature, and weather play a huge part in herping success. Know the climate of your target species, and look at the places that fit that climate.
Ya flat objects are usually a gold mine, especially when its cool out at night.
-I use a piece of bamboo to lift boards and rocks. Its light/sturdy and wont tie you down as much.
