Hi, I will soon be joining the NJHS and have a question. I am raising and planning to breed leopard geckos to sell to the public, do I have to actually start a business or can I obtain permits from the state. Would I be considered a wholesaler or retailer. Please give me some info on the proper channels to take. Thank you in advance.

You can get all the specifics on the njhs web site. I believe the state wants a receipt in the form of a temp permit(they supply them I think) for all the reptiles you sell unless they're not on the permit needed list. I kinow places like PETCO have to go thru this for leo sales so I assume you would too. It doesn't seem too bad to me, I think it's $100 for the retail/wholesale permit. Let me know how you make out, I'll be going thru the same thing next season hopefully.

I seen the permit page but I want to know if I have to be a registered business or can I just sell them, you know Jersey with the whole tax thing!

With respect to the sales tax, this is normally determined by the total value of the sales, check with the local chamber of commerce as they will be able to provide you with the correct information.
Either way, if you sell something you are supposed to pay sales tax.

All you have to do is apply for either a retailer or a wholesalers permit. Retail if you want to sell to the public wholesale if you want to sell to stores. Of course they have to inspect your set up before the permit is issued.....
