STARTING TO BREED BOAS... WONDERING A FEW QUESTIONS.... BREEDERS READ PLEASEEEEE

SNAKEMAN12345 Aug 16, 2004 02:56 PM

okay i am a new breeder, i have kept boas my whole life and i think it would be so cool to breed them and i am dedicated to doing it. i was reading a boa breeding book and i was wondering a few things about it that i could not really understand in it. so far from what i understand the temperatures stay in between 82-85 degrees. i know you cycle the temperatures but i was wondering, do you cycle the temperatures when they are away from eachother for 8 weeks then put them together and bring the temperatures back to normal for breeding or do you keep the temperature at what it was durring those 8 weeks? and would it be good to keep the temp at 85 the whole year and when they cycle the 8 weeks make 82? and again, do i keep it at 82 threw the whole breeding season or change it back to 85? and should i do the temp change around the beginning of november and just put the snakes together when the cycle is up at the end of december? and how many months should i keep them together for the breeding season? sorry for all the questions, i have been reading but i dont get what they are saying alot of the time and i just want to double check with everyone so i get it all right as i go along in the book. THANK YOU and pleaseeeeee answer all of my qwuesions!

I FIND THA FUNNY SEEING AS A FEW WEEKS AGO YOU WERE ASKING THE FORUM IF YOU COULD KEEP BOAS OUTSIDE IN THE WINTER IN 40 DEGREE WEATHER.IF YOU REALLY HAD BEEN KEEPING BOAS YOUR WHOLE LIFE AS YOU CLAIM YOU WOULD KNOW THAT KEEPING BOAS OUTS SIDE IN THE WINTER REALLY ISNT A SMART THING TO DO!!! Now as for your questions i'll assume your talking about bci's. 82-85 degrees is what your boas should be kept at year long except when you are cycleing them. many breeders cycle thier animals at different temps some dont cycle at all as for myself i like to bring them down to about 70 degrees in the day time and between 65-68 degrees at night for a 2 month period. before droping the temps i dont feed them at all for 1 month and dont feed them the whole time that they are being cooled after the 2 months is over i bring the temps up gradually for the next 2 weeks once the temps reach the 80's i begin to feed them again and introduce them and keep them together for the next 4 months separateing only to feed them every 2 weeks for the female and every 3 for the male the thing to remember what works for me may not work for you that is where trial and error come in good luck personally as i've stated before i dont think your even close to being ready to attempt to breed boas but good luck anyway

No disrespect, but I think 65 is too cold. I keep my bci in the mid 80s year round. I actually put the male and female together during brumation (cooling period). Daytime high of 82, nighttime low around 72...and watch for signs of respitory problems. 8 weeks later I warm them back to daytime highs around 86 while keeping the nightime temp a little cooler. They are together until the female shows signs of being gravid, or the male loses interest.

On another note, from reading your post, I don't think you've ever owned a snake in your life....(Not directed at you John).

Good luck, Chris O
