Kingsnake Forum Data complilation.

Oscar Parsons Aug 16, 2004 02:59 PM

Hello Everyone,

The email, and posts have stopped, so I'm assuming I won't be getting anymore data points at least for the time being.

This data was collected on a voluntary basis for the most part. I grabbed a couple data points from signatures, and I inferred one persons collection based upon photo's posted.

Several prominate posters chose not to participate. I cannot give any reasons why or why not.

Be sure to discuss what you think about the data. If you see any errors please let me know and I'll edit it. Everyone should be proud, we worked together to create this information.

Hey Oscar,

I'm James and im happy to say that i was one of the participants in this fantastic idea of yours.

I'd just like to commend you for doing such a great job. Looks like it was quite abit of time involved.

I recall you saying you would give this info back to the forum. So i was wondering if you plan on or have contacted the forum heads and discussed your ideas with them? And what exactly is your plan? Are you going to collect data and put together caresheets for all these species(or the ones that have a limited supply of info on the net)and have them put the info in their fact sheets? Or was there something else you had in mind?

Anyway its good that we all(most of us anyway) could work together for once in a positive way. Im also glad that we have dedicated individuals like yourself who are willing to put the monitors FIRST and do something like this to better our forum.

Thanks! and if you need help with ANYTHING give me a holla.

Cheers

I realize that you are doing this as a sort of "fun" forum project but there are reasons people may be apprehensive to giving out such info. One of the first things Castro did when he took over Cuba was make people register their firearms then when he decided to ban them (obviously his plan all along.) he knew where to go to confiscate them and since he knew what everybody had nobody could hold out on him. The same could happen if a state decided to ban monitors and not grandfather them in for existing owners. "Why we were on kingsnake.com and saw that you had X-number of monitors mr. jones, so give them all up now and don't hold out. This info could also be used by potential theives or animal activists looking to steal animals or inflict acts of terrorism on breeders (and if you don't think animal activist based terrorism isn't a potential problem ask the wolf people, or the big cat people or the primate people.) And some people just feel that it isn't anyone's business for reasons of personal privacy.

The main people Oscar is referring to in not listing their animals have routinely posted pictures of their animals and any follower of the forum knows what state they live in.

One of them is very open about where he lives, and says he has around 200 animals at anyone time. That person has also stated that fish and wildlife have been to his place several times. he also has a site with the main animals he breeds.

So with that said, they have their reasons and that is ok. there is a lot of information i wouldn't give out over the internet too.

However, no names are listed in any form on my spread sheet other than my own. Those are kept strictly confidential. I only asked for names/alias' so I could keep people seperated. Lord only knows how many water/sav/nile/ackie owners there are out there. If I didn't get names it would be awefully hard to keep the numbers seperate.

Wow that is so awesome!!! So many posts have been deleted. I've learned so much from that compilation. Now I know more or less what the average joe keeps. Killer, keep up the great work!

Hi Oscar,
Thank for compiling the data - although with larger populations of varanus to work with it would be more useful but it does show some interesting directions and a general interest clustering among the species you have listed = nice going - where do you go from here with the data?

~15 years ago, I took a tonne of pet shop listings and compiled a list of varanus available - maybe if we put the two things together, it might show something?? If I can find it, which I saw it a few days ago looking for something else, I will send it to you...

good going Oscar,

Well the plan iss to continue collecting data. Maybe guilt a few people into adding their information.

I was going to visit more forums and compile all the information I could. Frankly I was hoping to collect 200 data points from the Kingsnake forums.

To be truthful I thought there were alot more single animal owners out there. The average is more than 6 animals per person! Thats amazing to me. Hopefully I'll get more data and I can actually infer something.

I heard that owning 7 or more cats is recognised as a mental illness. We avarage over 6 monitors each. Could we be heading down crazy street ourselves I wonder?

cdanstan Aug 17, 2004 07:39 AM

theres one owner of a Varanus komodoensis, but it dosent reflect that. it dosent show if he has a male ,female, unknow? or did he used to own one!!lol

Oscar Parsons Aug 17, 2004 12:11 PM

He claimed to own 2.0.1 Komodo's. I figured I'd put it the fact that someone claimed it. However I did take the numbers out unless we get a zoo to submit some numbers or something.
