help me identify my tinctorius morph

gatorjake Aug 16, 2004 05:23 PM

I just bought this tinc today. It was labeled a patricia, but all photos I've seen of patricias have light blue legs. As you can see, mine has dark blue legs, except the feet, which are sky blue. Was it labeled wrong, or are some patricias darker than others. Or perhaps this is normal for a 1" juvenile? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Also is it too soon to sex? The front toepads seem slightly enlarged.

0.0.1 dendrobates tinctorius

Chances are it's a patricia. There isn't any real reason not to trust who you purchased the frog from, if anyone is going to know about its origin and history its the breeder. I have no experience with this color varient of tinctorius and have only seen them in person a few times but I agree that their legs are generally a lighter gray/blue rather than the dark blue that that yours has. If it is a different color form I'd say oyapok or pallid because of the white and blue but these are much smaller than patricias so you will easily be able to tell once the frog reaches adult size. Your best bet is to contact the breeder and get some more information about your frog and the frogs that produced it.

Devin has definitely given you some good advice. These morphs have a tendency to change colors as they age to adulthood. Your best bet on assuring you have the right morph is to buy from a breeder you trust, and then take their word for it. Nice pics, by the way.

I bought it at a local petshop. I'll ask them if they can put me in contact with the breeder. Also thanks for the info about color change with age.

Yes, it does look like a Patricia. Homer and the others are right about the color continuing to changes as they get older. Most of the ones I have seen look like the one you have pictured. The legs will get lighter as the frog ages.

If you can get a picture where the color is a little more in sync, I can be 100 percent positive, but at about 80%, I would say French Guyana Dwarf Cobalt - Looks like Aaron Handzlik's line. Where did you get it? That will also help with identification.
