TURTLE DOCK

nekot076 Aug 16, 2004 09:08 PM

Can anyone give me some ideas on how to build a turtle dock. I have a RES, cooter, and painted all about 5 inches in length. The tank they are in is 4'(length) x 2.5' (depth). I have some plexiglass sheets but am having trouble figuring out how to hang it. I preferably want the dock to be slightly above water so the turtles can still surface for air under the dock.

Thanks.

I did something similar to this once. What I did was cut the plexiglass to the exact inside measurements of the tank, then butted it up against one end, using an aquarium grade silicone to glue it to the glass. Don't use anything but the aquarium grade silicone, anything else will kill 'em all. If you can, drain your tank and keep it empty for a full day for your silicone to cure. If not, keep it supported. This worked fine for me. I then placed a couple small rocks up on top. I tried putting gravel on there but it just got kicked off. I had this one in a 29 gallon tank that I was keeping my softshell in, so I ended up putting a little lip up on it to keep gravel up there so he could bury himself in the shallow water, but I dont' think you'll need it.

Hope that works. If you dont understand ask me and i'll do my best to clarify it for you.

aquarium grade silicone is identical to any other 100% silicone. Just avoid ones that aren't 100% silicone such as bathroom silicones that have mold inhibitors

most other "100% silicones" are not truly 100% silicone. They all are going to have a mold inhibitor built into them, along with other stuff which is all toxic. So if you go to home depot and buy a tube that says 100% silicone, it will be toxic to your turts. They do sell the aquarium grade silicone though, it's usually over with the adhesives.
