bull snake or fox snake

violator Aug 16, 2004 11:06 PM

I found a snake on my deck tonight. I cant determine if its a fox snake or a bullsnake or a prairie kingsnake. It has the large blotches like prairie and fox snakes have. But the head appeared to be almost a solid black. i dont think its a bullsnake as the sides of the snake where either a yellowish or part of the large brown blotchs.
The snake shook its tail when i grabbed it also. At that time its head was goin under the deck and i couldnt get it out. It was about 5 foot and about and inch and a half in diameter.
So do prairie or fox snakes possibly have solid black heads?
sorry i didnt get a picture of it if i see it again i will try to. By the way i in nortwest iowa. The snake was in perfect condition! Very very shiny. Wish Iowa law allowed for collection of such species it was very buetifull. almost cooler then my brooksi king.

The answer is rather simple if you remember to look at the head. Locate the Prefrontal scales. All Ratsnakes have Two, Bulls (Pituophis)have Four. The only exceptions to this are Mexican species and hybrids.
