Highly Absorbant Rodent Shavings

totallyreptiles Aug 17, 2004 01:02 PM

Does anyone know any good brand of highly absorbant rodent shavings. I breed mice and rats and we clean them once a week or sometimes twice but we are using the cheap pine shavings that are $5 a bale. i am willing to spend more for something more absorbant to help with the smell.
Any info will be appreciated.
-thanks

Hey, were glad to help.
We currently use and recomend gentle touch litter its a little cheaper than the caree fresh bedding but works 10 x better in my opinion.
Its amonia absorbant, bio-degradeable and expands like you wont believe.
We currently change bedding about once eveery 15 days, before it was once a month but with the heat of the summer and excess drinking bu the animals its up to every 15 days.
Hopefully you can find some around your area because ordering from the company itself is expensive because you have to buy pallets and pay for freight.

I was using rabbit (alfalfa)pellets. About 1/2 to 3/4 of inch, change every week or 10 days. Then into the compost. Then into the garden. What had been waste, became useful. Well actually it became pumpkin!

Also pine and cedarare very bad for any animal. The bedding has toxins in it that kill the animals and slows down reproduction. I use Aspen bedding. It isn't very high neither.

Where do you get it from? Do I need to get it from a feed store or a petstore?
