So will I be keeping my Boas??? I would of moved out of state anyway if I had to get rid of them.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that boas and smaller pythons will still legally be kept in NYS. Burmese, reticulated, African rock, etc, are all slated to be banned by this amendment to the bill.
Hope this helped!

The way I read it is that the boidae family, was part of the old law..and was part of the bill that they ammended, the only boids now being banned are the ones listed in ITALICS.
If you read the "Explanation" just underneath the list it points out that anything in brackets {} is old law and has been ommited from the ammended bill.
So if this is passed, those who have bci, bcc, bca, bco etc...should be ok.

This was copied directly from the new bills summary:
JUSTIFICATION: The ban created in legislative bill numbers A2684-F and
S.7616 banned all reptiles in the Boidae family, which includes 74
species of reptiles, 69 of which are essentially harmless to humans.
The vast majority of these snakes do not even attain a length of 3
feet. A ban on the entire family harms a number of New York`s pet
owners without any significant improvement in the safety of the
general population.
I hope everyone can see the hand of herpers involved in the new bill. The language in the justification alone sounds like its coming off a thread here on kingsnake.
Hopefully this helps put a fire under everyones butts. We can and do make a difference with a bit of effort. Sure many will scream about the 5 animals that were banned, but I personally see no problem with a major city banning animals of that size (JUST MY OPINION). I would much rather see sensible laws put in place rather then the blanket efforts the radical pet people would like to see.

“There is a grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that whilst this planet has gone on cycling according to the fixed laws of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved.” -C. Darwin, 1859
from what i read there, i think ALL breeding is illegal.
am i reading this correctly?
- paul buckley
I believe breeding is only illegal if it's the animals that have been banned. Even if I'm wrong, I truely don't think they're going to care if we breed the animals not mentioned on the list.
The law makes provisions for keeping the "banned" species with a license. While I don't think this is altogether "fair", I think it's a comprimise I can live with considering it's not an all out ban. This law is directly targeting retail business as their method of enforcement, not pet owners.
There is another bill in progress I feel people should be aware of which is very similar to this. It directly names business as the target of the bill, and bans from sale all snakes which attain a length greater than 8 feet. This is BCC, coastal carpet pythons, etc, in addition to the larger species named in the other bill.
Check out the link for more information on this bill.
