Emergency procedures for herp collections during natural disasters?...

carl3 Aug 17, 2004 04:07 PM

Some recent posts really got me thinking...

A TON of reptile breeders live in Florida…and many people have inquired into the status of various breeders and their facilities due to the hurricane. Well, I was wondering, for those that live in an area (like Florida) where tropical storms (or other natural disasters) occassionally hit, do you reinforce the structure of your facility or building? or take other precautionary measures? Naturally, I have this image of detached garages, sheds or other buildings being blown away and 100's of reptiles either killed or released into the wild.

Well, what happens when an entire collection of selectively bred snakes with genetic mutations or hets are accidentally released into the wild....In upcoming years, should we expect to see new breeders claiming to have produced new strains of existing morphs due simply to catching one of these escaped herps? Not to mention what effect this could have on wild populations. I know Florida is a well known hotspot for alien species already and I know that no one intends for this type of emergency but do some of you plan or prepare for an emergency like this in some way? There are so many unforeseen things that can occur and as we all know, owning reptiles is not a right, but a privelage which is constantly under threat and scrutiny. Therefore, its important to always think ahead and learn from others' experiences in matters like this. Please share your wisdom or emergency procedures, if you have any...

Jason

I just seen on Discovery Channel not to long ago a Wildlife Show and they was in Costa Rica, at a Venom Research Lab, and they had special Rack's that held there snake box's secure bacause they said they were hit before by an Earthquake, and Hundred's of Venomous snake's got loose in there Lab, Not Good ! ! I live in Nebraska, temp's here in the Winter can be well below Zero,at those temp's an 80 degree snake room can get (Real Cold Real Quick)if there is a lose of Power,I keep three large Styrophome cooler's and snake bag's for all my snake's, in case i have to move them quick, just in case !

I have my home wired so I can use my generator to power my home if the power goes out in the winter. In the winter of 1997 my power went out for 3 days. I had all my boas in tote boxes right next to my fireplace and closed up most of the house to keep the heat in the living room and kitchen. After this happen I said this will never happen to me again. So I had my electrician friend wire my home so I could use a big generator to power my entire home if I need to. Funny thing is now I have never had to use it yet. All my boas made it thought the 3 days with out any trouble they where nice and toasty next to the fire.

Take care
Tom
