Substrate and feeding question

ta2edskin Aug 17, 2004 06:23 PM

I was wondering if this is the cypress mulch that I can use for my argentine b&w tegu? I am getting him/her tommorow and just got the cage set up.He/she is still a baby and I am wondering if this will be a good substrate to use. I am getting him/her from agama. Plus I was wondering how you guys feed crickets and insects on this do you use a bowl so they dont get any mulch in there mouth when they eat. Thanks Steve

I can't be 100% sure of the mulch, the pic is a little small, but it looks like cypress mulch. Where did you get it? Why wasn't it labelled as cypress? Anyway, bowls aren't any good because the crix will just get out and run everywhere. How big is the tegu? Smaller animals are usually more at risk for impaction. I recommend not feeding crix on the mulch. They can hide in the mulch and there is always the risk (however slight) of impaction. Tegus are really good at avoiding eating the substrate. They will rub their snouts and wipe their faces with their claws to remove debris. Still, I think it is better to go buy one of those plastic large kitty litter pans. Watch the crix though, the really dedicated ones can climb out. For the most part, the crix can't climb out and there is no risks, plus easy cleanup once little buddy is full. Add tegu crix and watch him go nuts!

Thanks for the quick reply. It is cypress mulch I was just wondering if it was suppose to look like that with the big pieces.I thought it was suppose to look diffrent for some reason.I have some rubbermaid containers that I could use to feed the tegu in. They said that the tegu was acouple weeks old that and it still has the green color on him. The Tegu is coming tommorow morning I just wanted to check a few last questions I had. I will post some pics of him/her as soon as I can. Thanks Steve

Hey, Steve! Sorry I dropped our thread down below. I was in the middle of Hurricane Charley and just got my power back on late last night.

I used cyprus mulch from the start with no problems. They did not ingest it, but love to burrow in it. The one thing I did do was to keep my babies in a 20 gallon tank for awhile, so they did not have trouble finding and catching their crickets. I did use a shallow bowl, not to keep the crickets in, but to get them used to looking at the bowl as the food source rather than my fingers (Remember, pinkies are pink, but so are fingers!)

Thanks for the help. I decied to use cypress mulch.I am thinking about feeding the crickets in another container that way the tegu can get them and they cant get out of the cage. I am using a food dish for the meal worms and other food I am feeding him/her. Steve
