Beardie hatched with no tail

marcantony Aug 17, 2004 08:01 PM

My first (and last) clutch of bearded dragons is hatching, and the most recent dragon to emerge has no tail. There is simply a stub between it's 2 rear legs where the tail would normally start. There is no wound, it just looks like the tail didn't develop. The dragon seems alert and active, and it appears to be a good size. Is this common? Will it have an adverse effect on the dragon's development? Any insight or advice is appreciated. Thanks.

I have never had that experience, nor heard of it, but it definetly sounds like a genetic defect! Are the parents brother and sister, or are they related in any way? If not, it could also be that one of your dragons parents were brother and sister, therefore making your dragon have the defective genes. No bashing here, just wondering. I dont think that the stub tail will affect him in any way unless he has other genetic defects that are possible internal/neorological. Well look at the bright side, at least you wont have to worry about him getting tail nipped! Im sure he will have a great personality regardless of his physical defects. Good Luck, give updates, and try to take some pictures!

Again, Good LUCK!

Thanks for your response. Both parents were acquired from totally different sources, in different parts of the northeast. The father was a red, and the female was a normal. I will try to take some pictures and post them.

what are you planing on doing with the beardie? if you keep it. never breed it. if you sell it make sure you sell it as a non-breeder. the problem might be genetic. if it is we dont want tons of tailess dragons running around in petstores.

its fair point, but one that could have been made alot more subtlely without getting heavy.

Rest assured that I would never breed a reptile with an obvious defect. I have been comtemplating what to do with it. It seems as active as the other hatchlings from the clutch, but it seems to have a little more trouble keeping it's balance with no tail. I have had one inquiry about adopting it, and that's very likely if it can be worked out. I am attaching pictures.

I have a monitor like that, he has a bent backbone, and thumbs missing, he also suffers from a form of mental retardation, it makes him unique and I have no problem taking special care of him. When I got him he was only 2 feet long and 2 lbs, he was 4ft and over 10lbs in one year after obtaining him. I make sure my bulbs in my incubators are away from all of my eggs, far enough to not have a problem with that. That is a possibility, and so are a few other things.

Hey there, are you going to keep that baby?? If you are thinking of giving him away or selling please let me know. I have 3 rescuded beardies and my oldest is 7 1/2 years. My heart just goes out to that baby with no tail. Again please let me know if you are going to keep it or not. Thanks.

If not, it will definitely not make it. It may have also not fully developed sex organs if the tail is too small?.

Good luck with it.
