Last year at the National breeder’s show in Daytona, my wife and I were introduced to a leachianus for the first time. We knew at that very moment, we wanted one. As we were unfamiliar with the care and husbandry practices of this species, we did the smart thing and left without one; but we did manage to purchase one of the only books on the subject. So we’ve been planning to own one for a year now; patiently waiting for the annual Daytona show.
We custom built an enclosure, and I was pretty happy with the results, so I wanted to share it. This was originally a hexagon curio cabinet. Then we made our “modifications”.
The roof was removed and replaced with screening. One lower pane of glass (side) was removed and replaced with screening as well.
On top of roof screen (mounted on the main structure for support) we have a lighting system with 1 nighttime red bulb, 1 UVA incandescent and 1 24’’ UVB florescent (I do use a low wattage daytime lighting combination).
All lighting is timed for a daytime mode and a nighttime mode.
All vegetation in the cage is fake; we made the trees with stuff we bought at floral supply mart. 2 of the “trees” are yucca logs, and one is bamboo. There are also 2 hinged hides inside.
Anyway, here is a pic. We did attend the Daytona show last weekend, and I’m happy to say that the cage is no longer vacant (pics to follow).
