building a leopard gecko cage

gmagecko Aug 17, 2004 11:56 PM

I want to build a "cage" for my sons 2 leopard geckos.I plan on making it 25"l x 15"h x 15"d with a tile floor. My question is are there any problems using heavy plexi glass as opposed to shatter proof glass. Also shold I put anything under the tile.I am not sure how I would regulate the temp. of the under tank heater with the tiles.Any input would be appreciated.

Using plexi glass really is the best way to go, you can cut it yourself and its definitely less likely to break when struck. You can regulate temps with different methods from uth to a heating lamp, but its really easy to use uths when you have tile flooring. G/l with your design and build.

You should use Plexiglass. It's much better than Tempered Glass. As far as regulating the temp there are a couple of ways. You can A) Invest in a thermostat which is highly recommended anyway if you plan to use a undertank heater. and/or B) You might also look into a rehostat or dimmer switch and wire the under tank heater or uth directly to that which will allow you to adjust the amount of heat given off by the heating pad. C) You might also look into investing into a surface temp gun. they're only like $20 and you can order them right off the internet from proexotics.com

Good Luck. Post if any new questions arise.

Hill said that the temps on the hot side is 100 - 110. Tey to look for a cooler lighting system. I want to build this system also however; I want to make the bottom a cabinet.

It isn't really that hard to build. To reduce the heat from the lights you could use use a dimmer with the lights. The 100 - 110 temp was measured directly below the light, some of the geckos actually crawl under it and then move to thermoregulate. If anyone needs some extra tips to build the enclosure just send an email.
