Pine chips as bedding

Gecko_LoL Aug 18, 2004 09:43 AM

Will leos use humid containers bedded with pine wood chips instead of vermiculite?

I may be mistaken about this one, but I believe that Pine is poisonous and harmful to leos isn't it?

Pine and spruce are poisonous for Chameleons so I think it might also be poisonous for Leos. Aside from that, if one of your Leos happens to eat a small chip it could swell in the stomach causing an impaction. I would stay away from it. I use a small container with moist Bed A Beast and have never had a problem with that. All of my Leos seem to like it.

Do not use any kind of wood chips at all they have oils in them that hurt leos and many other lizards(can't say all lizards because im not sure). You can use peat moss, vermiculite , or just paper towls for a humid hide.

Interestingly (I thought), you're not supposed to use shavings like pine or cedar for dwarf hamsters, either! The huge amount of oils in them does a lot of harm. But aspen shavings are okay.

Either way, all above have made excellent points. The oils may well prove detrimental (if not fatal) to your leo's health, and, if swallowed, the wood will do as wet wood always does - Swell. It can kill a leo very easily.
