Evening -

I have sort of an odd question. I have five turtles (Red Ear, Painted, and Map). They are all nice and healthy, eat well, bask a super lot, ya know - happy turtles. I notice though that their scutes do not fall off as much as I'd figure they should. A lot of the times, they don't fall off - but because they are loose they get some alge stuff underneath and their shells look super ugly. I took one of my smaller painteds out today to give em a little scrub, and low and behold nearly every scute came off without much more than a little rubbing (shell cleaning!).

So what causes scutes to come off? Do they need more of something? Calcium? A new bulb?

Thanks!
