Ringneck & Pinkie

slbutler3 Aug 18, 2004 10:00 PM

My ringneck ate a snake scented pinkie! I didn't think she would, because I haven't heard of it before. Has anyone else ever gotten one to do this?

I had thawed out an extra that my cornsnake didn't want, so I scented it and gave it to her to see what would happen, and she took it right away. It took her a while to get it down, but she did it. This will make my life easier if she'll eat them regularly. I took a couple pictures, but they are on 35mm and aren't developed yet. Just thought it was interesting

Hello,

You got a pretty ringneck snake there, is it a regal ringneck and what is it's length ?

HerperHelmz has been successfully feeding his ringneck snake with salamander scented pinkie ( pls refer to Aug 4, 2004 posting with image ). Will you please explain a little bit more on how do you snake scented your pinkie. I would like to do the same for my northern ringnecks because I would not be able to get salamander for my ringnecks when the Winter comes around.

Thanks, she is either a regal or a regal/prairie intergrade, I can't tell for sure, and she is about 16 inches long. To scent the pinky, I have a snake that I found very near dead one night (it was dead by the time I got home), that I have had in the freezer since, in case I ever had trouble finding food for her. I cut a small piece of it off and put it in a cup with the pinkie and a little warm/hot water. Kinda gross, but it worked. I left them in the water for about a half hour.

I had the same concern as you about being able to feed her over the winter, so this is a big relief!

Thank you for sharing the snake scented info., It's amazing to learn so much about snake scented techniques from you and the orhter two posters in one day.

My northern ringnecks are too small ( they are about 9'' long ) to feed on pinkie now. Regarding of finding salamander in the Winter problem, I will try to do some worm farming myself for this coming Winter and I heard it is quite easy to raise redworms , all you need is soil and overleft fruit and vegetables. Also raising redworms is much cheaper than buying pinkie and I can use the surplus for fishing bait too.

There you go. I wish there were places to fish where I live, but I live in El Paso, and the desert isn't really the place for fishing...when I move back to Wisconsin I will get back into it though.

and feed it pinkie parts? Unless you have something against chopping up dead mice, it should work.

Hmmm, good suggestion, I never thought of giving pinkie parts butI know for sure that northern ringneck will take salamander and redworm without problem. I may try your suggestion and feeding my ringnecks with pinkie parts in the Winter but now salamander are abundant and they are free. Thanks.

Why not hibernate them?? They are northern ringnecks, they are supposed to hibernate, why not just do what they would do in nature? You can also feed them scented pinky parts, pinky heads, or keep a load of frozen salamanders for over winter feeding.

Hibernate my ringnecks is actually one of my plan, I have read a lot of articles lately about how to build a snake hibernaculum but I have not make up my mind yet. I really don't want the ringnecks die under my care because I will feel guilty like hell.

See, you now have it easy, for one, you have a regal ringneck snake(not a intergrade specimen), for two you got the snake eating pinky mice from scenting with SNAKE. I could only wish that I could get all of mine on snakes or snake scented pinkies, as snakes are easy for me to supply. You don't need to do what you did to scent it's first pinky everytime. Take a snake shed skin, or a piece of a snake, and rub it on the pinky, you can even rub the blood of the snake piece on the pinky. The regal will take it, it is quite strange to watch a ringneck eat a pinky, as it doesn't look possible at all, my 20 inch northern takes anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes just to eat one.

I had her on scented fuzzies, but I can't find any salamanders now and no one wants to help me out and get me some so she refused everything I offered since August 1st.

Hey michael, next time you get a salamander you can stick it in a small food chopper ($5 at wal-mart) and you can blend it up and make some little miniature ice cubes with a little bit of using your head on that. You know make real small cubes of it and thaw one out when you need to scent. It works with hognoses when you blend up toads.

Yeah I've heard of people making toad slurries. lol the only problem is I can't get any salamanders. I've even tried force feeding, Giant has some pretty strong venom as well, I hooked a small frog on her back teeth hoping she'd eat it, she didn't, but the frog was dead by morning.

Yeah, I know I went a little overboard with the scenting, but I wanted to make it very "snaky" the first time because I really didn't think it would work at all. Now that I know she'll take it, I will keep a shed from one of my snakes and start doing it an easier way.
