Worst smelling snake musk?

sullman Aug 18, 2004 10:18 PM

Just want to hear what's the worst smelling snake that has musked you or musk that you smelled? Just a little convo piece going on. While I have smelled some horrible musk from snakes from the smell of moldy leather to the smell of burnt rubber the worst smell I have smelled come from a snake came from a common eastern garter snake.

Now I have caught and smelled garters before and they have never been that bad but this maybe 12-13 inch garter smelled so horrible I almost gagged! I swear it smelled like a rotting corpse. It was so bad I only sucked in a little bit into my nose and could smell it for the next 5-10 mins and he didn't get any on me it just hit the ground but as soon as he opened that vent...whew..he went right back where I found him and my wife who was hiking with me just held her nose and kept on walking.lol

I don't remember which it is, but some of those worst supposedly comes from a small fossorial snake. I don't remember if it is a worm snake or ground snake or some other small species, but it is one of those. Personally, I can't STAND kingsnake musk. The speckled kings I found just drove me crazy when they would musk. Nerodia and Thamnophis and Agkistrodon don't bother me at all though.

The worst is a Sonoran Mountain Kingsnake. Western Diamondbacks are bad too.

no Gartersnake could outstink a:

Blind Snake (Leptotyphlops) - small quantities, but it can bring tears to your eyes. They have to be pound for pound the worst!
Copperhead
Prairie Rattler
Longnosed Snake - not the musk, but the blood they release from their cloacas has a disgusting odor
Rubber Boa - a really acrid smelling musk, IMHO. I wouldn't eat one!
Sunbeam Snake - these puppies produce a really vile secretion

I would have to agree that common eastern garters are bad, so are speckled kingsnakes. Although it is kind sadistic, I kinda enjoy nerodia musk! How sad is that.

` One of the Anacondas in my group will musk, when tired of handling. I don't really know how it would compare to some of the Colubrids. I just know that being a big snake, he can produce a lot of it, squirt it, or whip his tail and throw it. Believe you me, it will bring tears to your eyes, and gag you. He hasn't done it for a couple of years, because I'm VERY careful with him, since getting a snoot full.

while I can't think of any good ones, I can think of some really powerful (for their size) offenders.
The southern ringneck has a long lasting musk and I think the pine woods snake has an even more pungent and lasting odor.
You can't get it off you!
Some of the bigger yellow rats and everglades musk a lot.

2nd choice – any ringneck. Gram for gram, they pack a whallop.

3rd choice – Epicrates striatus, Haitian boa. Not at the top of any list for its smell, but in terms of slimy consistency and quantity (like turning a faucet on low), it is impressive.

gotta be garters; I have gotten musked by one, and washed the shirt I was wearing, only to smell it again. Their smell is kind of like a lingering presence that will not leave you alone. Kinda like that one episode of Seinfeld with the car and the valet, lol.
