Hognose eggs

slbutler3 Aug 18, 2004 11:20 PM

Just thought I would post a couple pictures that turned out pretty good...

Candling

Candling

A couple of them developed transparent areas on them like the bottom of this one

I had heard that this is due to overhydration, so I replaced the perlite (and got rid of that moss) and lowered the humidity a little, and they seem to be developing fine.

When I was first reading about incubating the eggs, I read to cover them with moss to keep them moist. After a day, it started to mold a little, so I took most of it out. I couldn't get it all though, so it kinda looks messy...I won't make that mistake again. These are my first eggs, so any input/advice is welcome.

How many did she lay?
I have never heard of the moss thing. I hope they are all right.
As long as the moisture and temps are right the rest should take care of its self. There are plenty of people on this sight who can give you much better info than myself, so I won't comment further. Keep us posted!

Thanks! There are six eggs, due to hatch in about a month. I'm so excitied! There's not much that's cuter than baby hognose snakes.

I just started to read on this forum and I saw your post. I sort of had the same experience with my son's rankin dragon eggs. This was the first time I've had to do this and I had so many people saying different things to me and there was so much on the internet. Anyway she laid 17 eggs and only 2 hatched. I was told to put them in a incubator with perilite and a mixture of a little pot soil. Then I was told to keep the mixture moist by spraying it every couple of days. toward the end of the incubation I noticed that the eggs were sort of caving in. I talked to a exotic vet at a reptile show and he said perilite wasn't good, which is what I used. He told me to use vermiculite ,something like that-I found it at lowe's in the garden dept. He told me to get the vermiculite damp and put the eggs into a tupperware container with the lids on and put them in the incubator and wait for them to hatch. I have 17 more eggs in this right now and so far I haven't noticed any problems. Good luck, Traci
